The American Athletic Conference today announced its 2023 football schedule. The Temple Football season, the second under head coach Stan Drayton, will get underway on Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Owls host Akron.
The strong non-conference slate sees games against one first-time opponent – Norfolk State on Sept. 16 – as well as three contests versus Temple's former conference foes. Temple battled Akron as a member of the MAC, Rutgers as a member of the American, and Miami (Fla.) as a member of the Big East.
The American Athletic Conference faces some realignment in 2023 allowing Temple fans to see some new opponents for the Owls. Temple will host UTSA, coming off an 11-3 season, on Oct. 7 in the first-ever matchup between the two schools. The Owls will travel to North Texas (Oct. 14) and UAB (Nov. 18) for the first time. Joining those schools in the conference will be Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, and Rice, although they are not scheduled to meet Temple in 2023.
Temple is scheduled for two primetime games – a Thursday night battle at Tulsa on Sept. 28, and a Friday night contest versus SMU at Lincoln Financial Field on Oct. 20.
Overall, there are seven home games on the schedule, including the regular season finale which is flexed to be played either Friday or Saturday, Nov. 24/25. That date will be determined no later than Oct. 9.
Kickoff times and television designations for the first three weeks of the season, as well as the season-long weeknight games, will be finalized by June 1. The rest of the schedule will fall under the customary 12-day and six-day selection processes.
Each of the 14 teams in The American will play eight conference games in 2023. The top two teams in the final single-division regular-season standings will meet Dec. 2 in the ninth American Athletic Conference Football Championship. The team with the best conference record will host that game.
