Recording of Temple Family Webinar: Support for First-generation students at Temple

Panelists:

  • Dr. Jodi Bailey, Vice President for Student Affairs
  • Dr. Frank Nelson, Associate Professor of Instruction / Director of the College of Science and Technology's First Generation Initiative
  • Carlos Bates, Academic Advisor, College of Science and Technology
  • Liz Ulivella, Associate Director, Center for Undergraduate Advising, Fox School of Business and Management
  • Brandy Jericho-Beach, Parent and Family Programs Coordinator, Division of Student Affairs

Advice from the panelists:
"I think that students need to take risks...the good kind. And that means not writing off opportunities before you've actually investigated them." - Liz Ulivella

"They need to know that if they change their mind it's also okay...So I would just sort of talk to your student about that and what their aspirations are. And if they've explored other options, or they're thinking about different things,...but they might sort of at times be waffling. And that's also okay.  College is a time for them to sort of explore different things academically, socially, culturally. And that's not to say that whatever values are at home or culture there is at home isn't important, but this is a time where they can sort of be in their own space, and sort of make their own world to some extent, that they can then come back and share with you." - Frank Nelson

"They're [students] gonna have difficult times. It's a it's a growth mindset. You're not gonna pass everything...Be supportive...they're gonna have their growth moments and just be there and listen often...They do need you. They say they don't want us. They they say they don't need us. But just call and say, "Hey, I'm just checking in on you. Have a good day." That that goes a long way." - Carlos Bates

"I would say that one of the things that I wish every person would take advantage of is to walk around to look up. Walk around and see all of the great things that are happening at the institution. Walk into spaces that you don't spend every day. Go to the events that are happening on campus....It's very easy to just go to school and go home. But this is the only time that all of us have to be able to be with one another for common purpose and common mission and have common identity in a place where we embrace that and we celebrate it. And so college is not just about the classes...So for our parents, for our faculty, for our staff, for our students get involved, and make this time something that is exciting." - Jodi Bailey
