Tips from a Temple mom: Studying Abroad, Temple Rome

So, your child has made the brave decision to study abroad at Temple’s Rome campus. First, congratulations, this experience is something that will give them memories of a lifetime. But you may have unanswered questions, or just need tips, or advice. Well, I am here for you to guide you through as my daughter was in the program spring of 22’.

What to know before they go

One of the most important things would be communication between you and your child, especially when they are across the world, therefore I would advise that your child’s phone carrier is “unlocked”. This allows Temple Rome to set them up with an Italian phone plan which was pretty simple, effective, and affordable. If you do not know if your owl’s phone is unlocked, a quick easy call to your carrier will do the trick. Doing this will avoid the scammy and overpriced international fees.

Packing… Where do I even start? Firstly, the one thing my owl appreciated was a nice pair of comfortable shoes. She walked about five miles per day on average. The week I visited her we walked a peak of seventeen miles in one day! This is definitely where you chose comfort over cuteness.

Research financial aid. The thought of sending your child across the sea for four months can be overwhelming when you think of finances. Luckily, Temple makes their financial aid very accessible to students through the same site where students apply for the program. Be sure to apply in time to meet the deadlines.

As much as you would want to call your Owls to hear their experiences while over in a new place, give them a little bit of space to enjoy their current state. Ask your child lots of questions when they come home from their adventure abroad or maybe you can even take a family trip to visit. Get excited about hearing about their trip because they'll undoubtedly be gushing with stories and will want nothing more than to have you listen to them. Allowing my Owl to study abroad was one of the best decisions we made aside from choosing Temple.
