Stay Connected: Supporting Your College Student Through Midterms

Posted over 1 year ago  in Student Support.

Hi Temple Parents! As we enter midterms season, the Wellness Resource Center would like to offer some helpful tips and information to support your college student through this time of the semester.

Our goal with this newsletter is to provide you with valuable insights, tips, and resources to help you navigate this transformative time in your child's life and yours. Our office is here to support your child’s well-being while here at Temple!

Who We Are: The Wellness Resource Center is Temple University’s health promotion office; we strive to support members of the campus community in exploring wellness and creating a life that aligns with their values. We offer intentional learning opportunities to promote exploration and meaningful connection.

Wellness Tip: Exam season can be stressful, if you are having trouble navigating tough conversations with them try these 3 V-A-R steps. Validate, Appreciate, Refer is a way to listen to someone you care about and help them cope.

First, validate their feelings by letting them know what their feeling is okay, and you believe them. Try using statements like “That makes sense,” or “I’m sorry you are struggling right now.”

The next step is appreciate their courage by letting them know that speaking up is a challenging but important step. Appreciate sounds like “Thank you for sharing,” or “You are not alone.”

The last step is to refer them to skills and support by letting them know that help is available and refer them to appropriate resources. Refer can be directing them to the resources below or helping them decompress after that difficult conversation with self-care or fresh air.

Campus Resources During Midterms: Here are some campus resources to support your student throughout the semester but especially during exam times!
