Parents: It's Time to Take Care of Yourself

Since we became parents, our focus has primarily been on our children. Well-visits, school events, birthday parties, graduations. And a new layer of challenges recently: mental health awareness, COVID and social media influence. Now that our children are on their way to becoming independent adults, what about us? Have you been to the doctor recently for a checkup? And taken note of recommendations, like losing weight, exercising and getting enough sleep?

Now is the time. While we are accustomed to caring for others as the "sandwich generation," we must be strong ourselves in order to do that. And we need to find some enjoyment for ourselves.

As a parent of a child who has had some mental health challenges, the wife of someone battling cancer and the caregiver to older family members sometimes in need of advocacy and companionship at the hospital, I understand the juggling. This year, I have taken the following baby steps towards good health and enjoyment for myself:

  • I joined Weight Watchers. My doctor was not alarmist but let me know that losing weight would do me some good. It has. After 14 months, I have lost 17 pounds (it's not easy for me) and am no longer "pre-diabetic" (I didn't know I was).
  • I work walking into my days. I used to run, but worried about the damage long-term to my knees. I also do some strength and flexibility training. Practical more than building a beach body. I want my clothes to fit.
  • Some businesses, my own included (I'm a REALTOR), preach 6am clubs and intricate morning rituals. My morning ritual is sleeping. Unless necessary, I don't wake up until 9am and feel well rested. I have blended my work to be hybrid, which has afforded me more sleep + efficiency in my day.
  • Time freedom. Best achieved by focusing on your goals and saying no to what does not fit into that. You have to prioritize your family and loved ones over the loudest voice wanting you to attend an event you have no interest in. Be choosy.
  • The satisfaction of organization. Recently, I brought in a handyman to fix and paint what had been bothering me for years. I now love my house again. What a world of difference these small changes have made. Cleaning out closets and files go hand in hand with the feel good. Lots of donations!
  • Plan for retirement. This is a big one. And in these times of inflation and paying for college, it's hard. But look at what you are working with (assets like real estate, 401K) and try to figure out how this will stretch. For me, I am a 100% commission independent contractor with no pension, so I plan, plan, plan (mostly buying investment real estate). CD rates are excellent now. Every situation is different. But think about it.
  • Bucket list. Do you have one? Start your adventures. Start working towards achieving your dreams. Most of us are still healthy and able now. For me, it's getting to the shore as often as I can. One track, real estate mind, I bought that beach place during COVID and rent and use it. Bucket list done for me.

Wishing everyone a healthy, happy New Year as Temple parents!
